Bedfordshire florist Rachel Ince shares her favourite seasonal blooms, along with simple styling tips and creative ways to repurpose Falcon Enamelware pieces like the Fruit bowl or even a Loaf tin, into striking autumnal displays.
AUTUMN IN BLOOM
Can you tell us a bit about your journey into floristry?
I became a flower grower after moving to our Bedfordshire farmhouse four years ago. We have a 2 acre garden which had been very neglected and despite having no experience I knew that we had to bring this beautiful garden back to life. We have worked very hard to create a magical haven here, growing all the flowers that I use in my floral work. I have been inspired by some truly great floral designers and have spent the last few years learning and growing in my creative practice.
Are there any underrated blooms that really come into their own this time of year?
The Dahlia really is the star of the show at this time of year giving stunning focal flowers until the first frost in the garden, some favourites of mine are ‘Night Silence’ ‘Molly Raven’ and ‘Totally Tangerine’. I wouldn’t be without Cosmos and they are the perfect match for the Dahlia bringing light and air to an arrangement, complementing the Dahlia beautifully.
What colour palettes do you find yourself drawn to in Autumn arrangements?
Dark and moody palettes are a favourite of mine which really shine in the Autumn light, dusky rose shades, peaches, plums, blackberry colours with a pop of Chartreuse with something like Lady’s Mantle to give a contrasting look and lift to the arrangement.
Do you have any tips for creating a beautiful seasonal display at home - something simple but impactful?
Autumn is the perfect time to responsibly forage or look for surprising treasures in your garden or hedgerow. A simple Jug of wild Rosehips will light up your room with jewel tones, just perfect.
How did you first discover Falcon Enamelware, and what drew you to it for your floral work?
I grew up in the New Forest using Falcon Enamelware, we had an Aga & still have one now and we always used Falcon. For me it is that sense of nostalgia & a product that is made in a traditional way, made to last the years. I first experimented using it in my floristry work with a simple bunch of Tulips for the kitchen table & it paired perfectly, since then I have expanded my collection to include pieces for different styles of floristry.
Do you have a favourite Falcon piece to use as a vessel? What makes it special?
For me it has to be the Fruit Bowl, I absolutely love it’s depth and footed look. Perfect with some chicken wire to create wild dramatic arrangements. My current favourite is the new Spring Green, such a fabulous colour that complements any shade.
How does enamelware change the feel of an arrangement compared to traditional vases or glass?
The new range of colours are fresh and exciting, simplicity at it’s best. At home on the kitchen table or as a focal piece. Last Christmas I used the Loaf Tin for Festive table arrangements, the added bonus for me as a keen cook is that after a cycle in the dishwasher they are ready for baking again!
